lacquer or varnish for fishing rod guide repair?
Hi there, i have a stack of cheap fishing rods that need rod tips and guides replaced, once the guides and tips have been replaced i will need to cover the binding with some sort of solution and i was wondering what would be the best out of lacquer or varnish? remember its to cover the rod bindings, and it has to be flexible,and it also has to last for a few years as well, would furniture grade lacquer or varnish do? im doing this because idon’tt want to go and spend the kind of money that they are asking at the tackle shop, thank you all
I highly recommend U-40 Permagloss finish. It’s made for coating your wraps and will last, not discolor and remain flexible for a long period of time. It’s very inexpensive and you don’t have to mix like an epoxy and a small bottle will last a long time. Varnish will crack and yellow in a very short time. Lacquer would be the best if you want a product that you can get from your local hardware store but not as good as the U-40. A good tackle shop should have this. If not it is easily available online.
