Commercial Fishing Reels

Carp fishing can be quite an expensive hobby, but it needn’t be at the start. There are just a few essentials that a hopeful carper needs, which I’m going to briefly run through.

Rod

Pointing out the obvious here. You only need to start out with one, no need to go crazy with three in a rod pod yet. A 12ft rod carp rod with a 2.5lb test curve will do the job. Test curve is the amount of weight required to bring the rod to a 90 degree angle while the butt of the rod is being held horizontally.

Reel

A decent baitrunner reel is essential. A baitrunner allows the fish to take the bait and begin to swim with it experiencing very little resistance, allowing you to strike. Alot of the time the fish hook themselves. Without a baitrunner reel you will most likely lose your rod in a lake.

Line

To start with, a 12lb line will be suitable. Don’t worry about colour etc. too much. You can pick up a decent 12lb for less than £6 easily.

Rigs

I recommend picking up some pre-made rigs off the shelf instead of learning to tie your own. Eventually you will want to tie your own to save money, but for now a pre-made hair rig with with sinking braid and a size 8, 10 or even 12 hook has been very successful for me. Make sure it has a rig sleeve to avoid tangles. You will also need a lead, rig bead to stop the lead sliding over the swivel, and a baiting needle and bait stops. The baiting needle allows you to slide the bait onto the needle, then hook the small loop on the end of the hair rig, and slide the bait onto the hair. You can then use a bait stop to hold to bait in place, I normally use a small stem if grass. I will be doing a much more in depth look at rigs at a later date so watch this space.

Bite Alarm

A bite alarm beeps whenever line is being taken. It isn’t essential unless you intend to night fish or fancy a nap etc. Whenever I have been fishing I normally just keep an eye on my line or an ear out for my reel’s baitrunner kicking in. 95% of the carp I have landed have hooked themselves and bolted off down the lake. You can pick up a cheap bite alarm that will do the job perfectly for around £6. Check ebay for a Vx2 bite alarm, my fishing partner has one and its perfect.

Bank Sticks

I can’t imagine you want to stand there all day holding your rod. A couple of bank sticks are needed to hold your rod in place. Make sure they have the screw top so you can screw in your bite alarm and a butt rest. You can pick up a bank stick for as little as £2, no need to splash out on a rod pod just yet.

Landing net

A landing net is needed, believe it or not, to get your fish out of the water and onto your unhooking mat, which is also essential. You don’t need to spend a lot on a landing net to begin with, but you might want to take a look at the rubberised ones. Rubberised landing nets don’t stink terribly unlike normal landing nets, and are apparently better for the fish. 95% of commercial fishery’s rules state that an unhooking mat is required, therefore it is important you get one. Mats protect the fish while trying to unhook your rig, as naturally they are going to flap around a bit. I picked up my unhooking mat for around £7 and it is perfect (again, I will let you know where to pick one up in my review of my set-up coming later this weekend).

Forceps/Disgorger

Most the time I am able to get the hook out with your fingers, but every now and again an over ambitious fish will swallow almost half your rig. This is where a long pair of forceps or a disgorger is required. A disgorger can “hook” onto the line and then slide down, into the fishes mouth until you reach the hook. The hook can be gripped by the end of the disgorger, allowing you to twist and pull gently to safely remove the hook.

Tackle Box

A tackle box is definitely required to keep all your bits and bobs in. It can be a nightmare rummaging through a rucksack looking for a disgorger with a carp flapping around on your mat.

Mosquito Repeller

This isn’t required, but certainly useful. I stumbled across this on another blog. Quite simply it emits a high frequency tone that keeps mosquitoes away from your camp. For only a few quid you can’t go wrong.

Well there we have it, that is my opinion on what a beginner carper needs. If you feel I have missed something out or have any comments at all, please feel free to leave one! Be sure to watch this space for a review of my current carp set-up.
