Fishing Reel Backlash

Having problems casting my bait-casters, help please?

I’ve fished with spinning reels for many years and am starting to use baitcasters for certain conditions and am constantly getting backlash, I’ve set the reel so the lure fall’s slowly when line is released, is it me or the reel? please give me a lesson on casting properly.

It all comes down to thumb pressure. Start with the spool set so the weight falls slowly and the spool almost stops when the weight hits the ground. Keep your thumb on the spool with light pressure as you cast and try to stop the spool as soon as the weight hits the water. You can practice in your yard with just a sinker to get the hang of it so you don’t have to waste fishing time untangling backlashes. It takes a while to get the hang of it but it’s well worth it to learn. As you get more comfortable with it you can back the pressure off the spool and get longer casts by using thumb pressure. I know it’s frustrating but it won’t take long to learn. Good luck fishing.
