Fishing Reel Lube
How often should I clean and lube my fishing reel?
I go fishing about once a week.
Give it a wipe over with a cloth every trip. The bearings are sometimes sealed for life, sometimes need oiling.
With one trip a week in half decent weather you could get a drop of oil into them every three months if you wanted.
No overdoing it though. Oil attracts dust and dust sticks to it so a lot of oil around isn’t good for reels, guns or anything else that needs smooth working.
If it’s running smooth and well then just use the perennial wisdom of engineers everywhere..
…..if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
The best maintenance is how you use it. No overstraining it, use the rod to pull the fish and then drop the rod end and wind in the line when it’s slack.
Careful with knocks and bangs, and keep it clean, then you’ll have a long lasting reel if it was made good in the first place.
