Accelerating out over sun-white
Cloud, blinding floating continents of snow,
We easily soar at mind-reeling height
Above that hazy distant world below.
This numbly silent humming’s proof we move,
Too late for apprehension now, too high:
The terrifying speed at one remove,
This giant’s roar is lost in tranquil sky.
Brief ritual meal, and then you doze, or look
Down from your window at anonymous
Fields or sea; pretend to read a book,
Whatever makes this limbo journey pass.
Then tarmac screeching under landing-gears
Jolts you awake, and sunlight fiercely glares.
