Deep Sea Fishing Setup Help?
I may be going on a private charter in Southwest Florida, offshore.
I have been fishing inshore and offshore all my life, but I’ve never got to test this question.
Is it better to have braided or mono line fishing in 70-130 ft of water bottom fishing, for snapper grouper etc.
I’ve heard braid gets taken in the current at that depth easier. But theoretically, if braid is thinner, shouldn’t it have less drag in the water?
If anybody can help me it would be much appreciated.
Also I was wondering what you prefer offshore bottom fishing, spinning or conventional reels?

130 feet is considered very shallow for saltwater bottom fishing. Since you only got less than 45 yards of line out, you won’t feel the stretch in mono lines too much. Bite signal lost due to line stretch won’t be a big concern in this case. So, both mono lines and braided lines will get the job down with ease. There’s no need to worry about currents. Again, you don’t have much line out and the current don’t have that big of a line surface area to push on to make a noticeable difference. As for reel choices, you could get away with any reel with adequate power and enough line capacity to handle your target species. A spinning reel will be easier to use. A conventional reel will give you extra power and a little insurance in case you hooked onto something very big. But, conventional reels will also take away some fight if fish aren’t that sizable.
PS: You only need to worry about everything you mentioned above when the water is 150 yards or deeper. 150 yards is when the “fun” begins. When you got more than 200 yards of line down, fishing will become really different. At 300 yards, you’ll need fairly heavy duty stuff just to retrieve your rigs so your arms won’t fell off. It is absolutely amazing (and a little painful) when you could feel the weight of the water on top of your rig. LOL
