Shimano Talica
I was shopping for a new set of fishing equipment one day when I walked inside a local sports shop and saw this Shimano Talica reel. It wasn’t very excited when I saw this little real from Shimano, but something inside me told me that I should take a closer look. So I asked the sales clerk to hand me the reel. She gleefully handed me the Talica as I had my eyes glued on it, thinking I must get to my boat and try this one. I didn’t care if it was over $400.
I was honestly amazed at how light it was. I didn’t expect it to as light as it felt. Weighing only around 18.6 oz, that’s approximately 1.165 lbs, it really felt good. Paired with the perfect rod, you probably could go out and sail all day just fishing. I remember thinking that I could fish all day without getting tired with this small, yet powerful reel. It’s pretty small, yes. But I was quite a believer of “big things come in small packages”.
Looking at the Shimano Talica II Conventional Reel, I just love how classy it looks like. With a silver body on its side metal plates with the gold plated metal spool, handle arm and lever, it certainly is an apple to my eyes. I was hoping though that the dominant color was flat gold. But I’m fine with silver and gold. As mentioned, it looks more classy this way. The handle was awesome. The “clicker ring” on the lever is plastic, though. I was thinking if this could be an issue with the durability of the reel. I guess not since I never heard someone rant about Shimano having issues with durability. After all, they’re one of the best- if not the top- reel manufacturers in the market. Well, after I checked on how it felt and how it looked, I checked on more specs just to make sure I wouldn’t just waste my money.
I was checking on the Shimano Talica TTAC10 model, anyway. I looked at the box where it was taken from and the specs included a gear ratio of 6.2:1 (H) 4.1:1 (L), which is good, because based on my fishing experience, a gear ratio like this is well, yes, fast but it doesn’t compromise the IPT. The line retrieve per crank is a pretty 38 inches on high, and 25 inches on low. The maximum drag at full is a good 20.0 lbs, white the max drag at strike is 13.0 lbs.
So the thoughts about this reel being costly was overpowered by my drooling over this casting reel. I bought it right away without second thoughts and brought other stuff I needed and headed straight to my boat for my first fishing experience with my new bestfriend- the Shimano Talica II.
So I sailed to see what my new discovery could do for me. So when I casted it for the first time, boy was I amazed. It cast perfectly. As they have always promised, the Talica II casting reel casted real great. I didn’t have to worry about catching grease on my hands since they used high grade greaseless bearings. I didn’t have problems either when I casted with an anchovy. I was thinking sardines would do good with it, too, which I’m still going to try.
The drag was great, I had no issues with it or whatsoever. The drag was designed to be so smooth, it could handle 4 lines than what’s expected of its size. Switching from low to high gear was as convenient as it could be, you dind’t have to be an expert fisher for you to do this with the Shimano Talica II,
I would definitely recommend this casting reel to my friends. It’s a treasure. I’ve finally found the reel that I have always been looking for- small yet powerful. Shimano Talica II Conventional Reel- it’s the bomb!
