best bait for saltwater inlet?
i mostly use shrimp, mullet, squid and live minnows but have yet to catch any thing worth keeping! yet i see people pulling out 5 lb barracudas and 2-3lb snappers 20 feet away from me, also how can i not get snagged every 5 minutes haha. i use light tackle, 17lb test super thin mono on a penn silveradoo 4000
the fish i have seen that live there are : snapper, cuda, jack, grunt, flounder, pompano, redfish and tarpon are there quite often feeding, infact there was something feeding on finger mullet today, i put a live one on my hook, casted and still nothing
I have a couple of things that will give you better results. I think the most overlooked inlet fishing knowledge is that fish face the current. so, always bring your baits into the eyes of the fish from upstream. Which means, always cast upstream. Another thing suspended bait hanging in the water column between the rod tip and the weight on the bottom is not a natural occurance. use less weight and let the bait move with the current. You say you use light tackle maybe your rod doesn’t have enough backbone to set the hook through a hard jaw? Or, your line might be too visible? I mean that if the water is green, use green trilene big game line. if it is ice clear water use stren or trilene clear. not all fish will eat chunk bait like cut up anchovies, sardines, chunks of shrimp or even clams or mussels but I sure like eating the ones that do. some fish like fast moving baits they can chase down catch and eat, like barracudas, I don’t like eating these. But by using your own tidal small fishes as bait you are going to increase your catching. By using artificials that mimic the action and look like these baitfish by using them you are also increasing your chances of catching bigger and better species. Maybe the hooks you are using aren’t the right ones for the bait you use. too big and too visible. You need to learn what is the favorite foods of all these fish and the library will help you to learn all you can and more about these fish, once you know where what and when you will figure out how but first you need to know how to find them, what to feed them and how much easier it is gpoing to be to catch them. Some fish feed on the bottom, some prefer feeding in the middle and others wait while hiding and ambush their prey by hiding behind structure and jumping out to feed on the unsuspecting.
