penn senater reels .?

has anybody tried casting these. how hard would you guess it would be to cast a 6/0 or 9/0 senator that has been magged
i was looking at the 12′ xh 6-24oz ugly stik

A 4/0 Senator (113) is no problem to cast — that’s why it comes with an aluminum spool. I’ve used one for years with 50# line, casting sardines and mackerel for 50 pound class tuna. A 6/0 senator is a bit more of a challenge, but I can cast a half-pound mackerel probably 30-40 feet with it with 80 pound mono, far enough that it won’t come swimming back under the boat. For most applications, though, it’s a trolling reel, as is the 9/0.

These are with 6-foot rods, casting from a boat. For surf fishing (as I assume that’s what you want the 12 foot rod for) I wouldn’t recommend anything bigger than the 4/0. Get a 4/0 and fill it with braided 100 pound line if you need the strength.

By the way, if you’re using a 12 foot rod, the leverage disadvantage will mean there’s no way you can put anywhere near 100 pounds of pressure on a fish, so you don’t need a reel made for line that heavy. That’s why big game rods tend to be short.
