Spool Baitcasting Reel

You can cast further with a baitcasting reel if the spool is filled with line. When should I add more line?

Long casting is facilitated by filling the spool with as much line as possible. However, eventually, you lose some line to the River Gods. I’m not sure when to top-up the spool since adding line it will introduce a knot. If I do it right away, the knot will repeated pass through the guides. If I want no knots, I’d have to strip all the existing line off. I use braided line so that sounds expensive.

The time to add line is when your casts are getting noticeably shorter. This is what I do. I peel off about half the line on the spoon and tie in the new line at that point.This way the knot never comes in contact with your guides or your thumb. And now the next time you need to add line you just go to the knot in your line and cut it and retie. That way it will always be a mark for you to look for when replacing your line. The only time I ever fill my spool with new line is when I buy a new reel.I have some reels that have had the same old backing on the spool for 15 years.And think of how much money you save by using this method.
