What set up for smallmouth wade fishing?
My dad and I like to wade fish rivers for bronze-backs. Before I was seriously into fishing I just took the one pole I had. Now however I have several set ups to choose from and I’m not sure sure which one to use.
Of these options which one would you suggest?
6′6 medium heavy bait casting with 8 pound monofilament
6′6 medium action spinning with 10 pound fluorocarbon
Buy a new rod and reel specifically for wading for smallies
I do have 2 other set ups, but they are out of the question because they are heavy action with heavy test braids.
I am leaning toward the baitcasting because I don’t want flouro due to the fact that I may use top waters. Yet at the same time even though I have confidence in my skills on the casting reel, it may be hassle-full to deal with a backlash while in the water. I have some cash so I wouldn’t have a problem buying some new stuff if I don’t have anything well suited for wade fishing.
If you’re wading, i’d go with the spinning rod.
I’ve wet waded for Smallies for years on the Susquehanna river in PA
currently I use a 7′ fast action spinning rod on a shimano reel w/ 6 lb mono. I would think your 6′6″ medium action spinning rod would be fine, i’d just go a little lighter on the mono (6-8 lb) florocarbon is fine, but Smallies (for the most part) at this time of year are not terribly line shy.
The reason I use 6 lb test is because if I hang up on rocks I can break off alot easier than w/ heavier line. I’m not too worried about losing a few jigs and Mr. Twisters since they are not expensive. If I’m using crawfish I can always tie another hook on.
If you plan on using rapalas, plugs, and other more expensive lures, then go with the heavier line
