Tying Fishing Reel Knots

How do I tie the beginning knot before re-lining my reel?

So I went bass fishing the other day and noticed that my line went about 20 yards out until my line was at the end of my spool, and I dont know the knot to begin re-lining my reel. Can you tell me how or refer me to a website that will tell me how?

This is kind of a personal choice. It’s like choosing boxers or briefs, or picking a deodorant. Some people may not agree with your selection, but if it works for you and you can operate with confidence, then you’ve made the choice.

My personal choice is the arbor knot. It looks very simplistic and looks like it may not hold, but it will. I usually make two passes around the spool, but other than that, this knot will hold to the breaking strength of the line, and it will tightly grip the spool so there’s no slippage. You can see how to tie it here:

I also have two pieces of advice for you. First, have a shop replace your line. They will use a spooler, which gets the line on your reel without any twisting. They’ll dispose of your old line, too. Doing it at a shop also means you don’t end up with 10 yards of line on a spool that you’ll never use. Most shops charge only a nominal fee to line your reel and the money you save by purchasing only as much line as you really need will almost pay for itself (not quite, but almost).

Second, if you’re going to do this yourself, and if you’re using a spinning reel, as I suspect you are, don’t forget to open your bail before you get started.
